About Us

Friends of Chance exists because of one dog, Chance, my first foster dog.

My first foster dog was a male 85 pound pit-bull mastiff mix named Chance. I’ll never forget the day when I first laid eyes on him. He was handsome. At the time I was a volunteer dog handler with the Escondido Humane Society (currently San Diego Humane Society). We were companions to the shelter dogs trained in animal CPR, dog behaviors, nutrition, and later were approved to foster. To foster meant to take the dog out of the shelter environment and provide a temporary home while the organization promoted adoption outreaches.

It was exciting to bring Chance home. He fit in so well. But only a week had passed when I got the call to bring Chance back to the shelter because there was a police officer interested in him. As I collected my emotions, I drove him back to the shelter to meet his potential new family.

I left Chance in the room with the officer and decided to stick around and walk the other shelter dogs while the two of them got to know each other. It was hard to keep the tears back when the officer found me in the kennel area. He said to me, “Chance is waiting for you”. “What do you mean?” I said. He said, “Chance will not take his eyes off the door you went out of. He clearly belongs with you.”

And so it began, Chance found his human and I adopted him, my first foster dog. We were inseparable. He was my buddy and we went many places together. With his endearing stubbornness, he taught me patience. He was a gentle giant that welcomed other animals into our home so we continued to take in animals as Foster Guardians and restore them back to health. Meanwhile, little did I know, the animals I cared for were helping to restore me.

My best friend Chance passed away July 22, 2017. Friends of Chance exists because Chance was the one dog that God entrusted to me to help sustain me during hardships and to be my support system throughout the years. He was a glimpse of God’s unconditional love which brought about a bond of love, friendship, responsibility, and dependence that helped heal my soul. I’d like others to experience the benefits a dog brings in one’s life. Be A Foster Guardian or fall in love and adopt.   Friends of Chance is a non-profit 501c3.
